The Folk Doctors are Merseyside-based duo John Armstrong and Ultan Mulhern. The band grew out of a collaboration on a song – No Place I Call My Home – for the Liverpool Acoustic Songwriting Challenge in the autumn of 2016. John composed music for Ultan’s lyrics and performed them on the recorded entry, as well as live on the night at the much-missed View Two Gallery on Liverpool’s Mathew Street.
Ideas for other songs came and went over the following months. A few stuck straight off, while others morphed along the way. Some of the songs ebb and flow with the local tides, and a couple dwell on social issues.
Thursday afternoons were spent honing the songs in front of the fire, eventually leading to recording sessions at Crosstown Studios in Liverpool, where The Folk Doctors’ debut album – silent shores – took shape over the second half of 2017 under the guidance of producer Jon Lawton.
